AIM:The 1980 Woolkanie Seismic Survey was primarily aimed at detailed gridding over areas of known commercial hydrocarbon accumulation, and more specifically was directed toward locating drilling exploration/appraisal sites on or near existing fields, plus pinpointing Jurassic structural apices. Several important discoveries of oil and gas have recently been made within the Mesozoic 'cover' sequence in artesian sandstone units of the Eromanga Basin, during otherwise strict process of investigating Cooper Basin targets. This has prompted a shift of emphasis away from former solely Permian objectives towards these new Cretaceous, Triassic and predominantly Jurassic structural plays.METHODS: Survey dates: 24/4/80 - 2/9/80. Energy source: Vibroseis. CDP coverage: 1200%. Recording mode: 48 channel digital - Sercel SN338B/SN338HR recorders. SP/VP interval: 150.0 metres, group interval: 75.0 metres.143 new lines totalling 1304 line km of 12-fold reflection seismic data were concurrently acquired by two crews in the Strzelecki, McKinlay, Burke-Dullingari, Strathmore, Della, Tirrawarra, Moorari, Fly Lake-Brolga and Kudrieke-Toonman areas.RESULTS:The current mapping of Strzelecki Field has provided a basis for the determination of Jurassic oil reserves, besides locating a site for Permian gas appraisal drilling south of the Strzelecki 3 well. The Strathmore Prospect lying astride the SA/Qld border is interpreted to possess hydrocarbon potential in both States. Potential exists at both Mesozoic and Permian levels. Overall mapping of the Della Field structure has been enhanced but intra-Permian reflections are still difficult to pick. The seismic over Tirrawarra Field was interrupted by heavy winter rains and flooding in the area, resulting in the development of large misties between data of intersecting lines. Several other promising prospects and leads within the Patchawarra Central Block area were addressed by the Woolkanie Survey. Those with demonstrated Permian structural trap potential for wet gas and oil are the Mitchie, Kudrieke, Andree, Woolkina and Brolga Prospects and the Mingana, Toonman, Quartpot and Yaringa strong leads. Provisional test well locations are proposed for Toonman and Yaringa.
