Contains the results of organic geochemical analyses performed on two oil-stained siltstone and sandstone drill cuttings samples obtained from 101.4 and 107.9 metres depth in bore NB/SR 12, and on two core samples cut from 161.3 and 196.8 metres depth in Warriner Creek 1, with the aim being to correlate the hydrocarbons present. Both sets of samples are associated with Stuart Range Formation carbonaceous shales of good petroleum source potential, in the southern part of the Arckaringa Block of PELs 5 and 6. TOC determinations and Rock-Eval pyrolysis were carried out on all samples, and selected samples underwent further GC-MS analysis of their saturate (straight-chain, branched and cyclic) and aromatic fractions to identify any biomarker compounds present and compile an organic geochemical profile of the molecular composition of the sample extracts. Because there was obvious contamination of the sediments analysed from NB/SR 12, a comparison between the extracts derived from this well and Warriner Creek 1 could only be based on biomarkers in the higher molecular weight range (C25+). Certain of these compounds by their occurrence and relative abundances do not suggest the same source of organic matter, which in Warriner Creek 1 is more terrestrial in character than that in NB/SR 12, lacking any indicators of lacustrine input. Other conventional geochemical pointers to maturity and depositional environment are more muted and less conclusive in this regard.
