This report summarises a geological review and evaluation of Outback Oil's EPP 15 permit area over the Polda Trough. The review is of a reconnaisance nature, with the main purposes being to determine the significance of the Gemini 1 well results, plus assess all related geological factors and their bearing upon further exploration. Within the permit area the trough may be divided into eastern and western sectors, based upon structural complexity and depth of sediment fill. The main exploration potential lies in the deeper eastern sector. The western Polda sector is complexly faulted and folded, with a generally shallower, variably displaced basement. Gemini 1 was located over a high basement block near the east end of this sector. Despite the seismic prognosis, the well failed to encounter any structural closure in the Tertiary to upper Jurassic interval, and so was not a valid test. The eastern Polda sector is a stratigraphically complex, but intact, west-dipping downfaulted block. This area has the thickest and best-developed sedimentary section, estimated at 10 000 feet. Two large possible drilling targets exist in this sector. One is a complex, rootless, closed structure with numerous stratigraphic units thinning onto it. It has an apparent closure of 450 feet and covers an area of 20 square miles. The second feature, of equal interest, is a large, deeper, west dipping stratigraphic lens. It appears to pinch out to the N, S and E and is partially fault-bounded on the W. It covers an area of about 30 square miles and has a maximum thickness of 700 feet. A detailed seismic review of the eastern Polda data is recommended, plus drilling of the two major structures presently outlined.
