Drilling of 39 exploration and appraisal/development wells to investigate potential oil reservoirs within the Lake Hope Block has resulted in the recovery of economic hydrocarbons from 26 of those wells, and has identified 7 reservoir units throughout the target stratigraphic section, ranging from the McKinlay Member of Early Cretaceous age to the Merrimelia Formation of Late Carboniferous age. These reservoirs exhibit significant stratigraphic variation and structural complexity, creating the need to be able to predict the probability of oil accumulations via an understanding of oil migration pathways. To resolve this problem, a 3D seismic survey was acquired over part of the Block in 1992. The Lake Hope Block Stratigraphic Study was initiated to support and supplement the 3D seismic interpretation and mapping project. This report discusses the first stage of the study, which is designed to establish reliable well correlations of all formation tops and important marker horizons from the Cadna-owie Formation to the pre-Permian.
