As part of a SAOGC sole-risk regional soil geochemical survey conducted across the southwestern Cooper Basin over the period 13/5/82 to 18/11/82, a total of 6059 soil samples were obtained by auger drilling to approximately 2 metres depth at sample points aligned within a 500 metre-spaced survey grid laid out over sparsely drilled, possibly gas-prospective areas that had been scheduled for seismic coverage later in 1983. Laboratory analysis of the recovered subsoil samples for total moisture, percentage of acid soluble constituents, and amount and relative composition of low molecular weight paraffinic hydrocarbons (ethane - pentane), was undertaken by Amdel Ltd. Because there transpired major problems with the repeatability of results stemming from the shallow-depth sampling, while also it was found that the distributions of soil-held hydrocarbon gas values that were mapped do not coincide with current interpretations of deeper underlying subsurface geology, the final report on the survey does not attempt to interpret the anomalies detected, but merely outlines the sampling, analytical and data correlative methods used. When more seismic data becomes available, it is recommended that another detailed comparison be made to reassess the prominent trend of hydrocarbon anomalies observed along the northern and eastern margins of the survey area.
