Conventional log analysis of the Pretty Hill Sandstone for Katnook 2 and Ladbroke Grove 1 has not reliably quantified gas-bearing from water-wet zones. This has led to 2 major problems: firstly, log interpretation has been unable to provide sufficient assistance for planning well testing programmes; and secondly, reliable estimates of volumetric reserves could not be calculated. In endeavouring to surmount these problems, a special core analysis laboratory (SCAL) project was proposed to field operator Ultramar by the author, making use of 15 plugs cut from core recovered during the drilling of Ladbroke Grove 1, and including the following measurements: - formation resistivity factor at Sw=1 for 4 brines - resistivity index for a simulated reservoir brine - air/brine end-point saturation at 200 psi capillary pressure - ambient and overburden porosity and permeability - wet chemistry cation exchange capacity (CEC) - absolute grain density - X-ray diffraction on both the less than and greater than 2 micron fractions - thin section preparation, photography and descriptions - SEM on plug offcuts after humidity drying. From the electrical conductivity measurements at multiple salinities a reliable estimate of the CEC could be made, and the accuracy of the less reliable wet chemistry method might then be determined. In addition, this data would enable the calculation of the 'm' cementation exponent and 'n' saturation exponent. The above suggested research into Pretty Hill Sandstone reservoir properties was carried out for Ultramar by Amdel Ltd in March 1990, and the results support several significant conclusions. This SCAL project has enabled the calibration of petrophysical parameters for analysis of Ladbroke Grove 1; high excess clay conductivity has not been measured, and core analysis indicates that relatively high values of irreducible water saturation are to be expected. The log-derived gas saturation of approximately 30% for the Ladbroke Grove Field indicates a transition zone above water, and is consistent with test data. The log-derived gas saturation of 40-60% for the Katnook Field may be a little pessimistic following comparison with the Leverett J (Sw) function data. Some further investigation of the quantum of water saturations in the Katnook Field is indicated.
