AIM: The Booleroo Seismic Survey was designed to: 1) improve data quality over that of earlier surveys through experimentation with acquisition parameters; 2) to add regional seismic coverage in the central part of Spencer Gulf; and 3) to further investigate leads identified by the 1985 Karemanda Seismic Survey. To achieve the first objective a 29 km portion of the Karemanda survey line FSG 85-03 was duplicated four times using four different sets of acquisition parameters. That set of parameters yielding the best results was then used for the remainder of the survey. METHODS: Survey dates: 2 - 4/3/88. Energy source: Tuned airgun array. CDP coverage: 6000%. Recording mode: 240 channel digital - LRS 16 A recorder. SP interval: 26.67 metres, group interval: 13.33 metres. RESULTS: The Booleroo Seismic Survey of 8 lines totalling 530 line km (407 km CDP, 123 km source array testing) was acquired by the Western Geophysical/Dresser Atlas M/V Western Pacific, and processed in Singapore by Western under supervision of a consultant from Hood River Associates of Colorado, USA. Data quality ranged from fair to extremely poor, generally poor, necessitating intensive velocity analysis and many processing stages. Nevertheless, more focussed acquisition parameters and careful processing have produced a substantial improvement over the results of the 1985 shooting in some areas, such that signal is present in several places to a time depth exceeding 2 milliseconds. Importantly, the rigorous velocity analysis has revealed a significant velocity inversion within the sedimentary sequence, a conclusion consistent with the results of the 1985 shooting and with current regional concepts of rift fill sedimentation. Furthermore, the 1988 seismic coverage in PEL 34 has provided much more conclusive evidence of the presence of a substantial thickness of sedimentary section with a high degree of structure. A structural lead of roughly 170 square kms (the Anna lead) has been identified in the central part of Spencer Gulf, with 3 seismic lines demonstrating some 360 milliseconds of dip reversal at the level of the Green seismic event. Another two leads, Brigid and Carmen, of high relief and relatively large areal extent, have also been disclosed. Further seismic work is required to detail all of these leads to drillable prospect status.
