6 drill core samples and 68 drill cuttings samples from selected organic-rich intervals in 4 Eringa Trough wells were subjected to organic geochemical and petrographic analyses to enable assessment of their hydrocarbon generative potential. Following vitrinite reflectance and pyrolysis determinations, solvent extracts of their organic matter content were fractionated into saturated hydrocarbons (alkanes), aromatic hydrocarbons and polar compounds (resins and asphaltenes), then characterised by GC-MS and GC-MS-MS methods to obtain estimates of source rock type, quality, derivation and maturation.
