This technical assessment of petroleum prospectivity and attendant exploration risk for the eastern Officer Basin was prepared by SAOGC staff to help management decide the merits or otherwise of making a PEL application for vacant acreage gazetted by SADME as available for bids until 30/11/84. It includes separate risk determinations for source, reservoir and trap components of the geological scenario, plus economic threshold estimates for triggering ongoing exploration and development programmes. A tentative 5-year work timetable is given which involves 3400 km of seismic and 8 wells costing a total of $28.3 million to address the undiscovered oil resource and provide a reasonable chance of finding a field of economic size.
