Preliminary analysis of 6 core samples from 1237-1266 metres depth in Giles 1 has revealed poor to fair organic richness, low concentrations of extractable organic matter and low hydrocarbon yields. Rock-Eval pyrolysis has confirmed the presence of mature gas-prone kerogen. Similar organic geochemical characteristics have been reported for the Gillen Member of the Bitter Springs Formation in the Amadeus Basin. For the upper Alinya Formation at Giles 1, maturation levels corresponding to the oil-generation window are indicated by sterane molecular ratios and polyaromatic hydrocarbon distributions. GC and GC - MS analyses of saturated hydrocarbon extracts from this unit have identified a diverse biomarker suite of molecular fossils, many of which are derived from eukaryotic algae, cyanobacteria and eubacteria.
