AIM:The 1980 Boolka Aeromagnetic/Radiometric Survey was flown over the southeastern Cooper Basin area in South Australia to attempt to determine the geophysical expression of buried basement major structures. It was known that large hydrocarbon accumulations (viz. Toolachee, Strzelecki, Della and Burke-Dullingari) occur in the northern half of the area flown, in close association with major anticlines. It was hoped that the Boolka survey results might provide some insight into any similar structures in the southern half of the area surveyed, where existing seismic and gravity data is sparse.METHODS:4403 line km of aerial survey grid lines were flown in August 1980 at an east-west flight line spacing of 1500 metres, with a north-south tie line spacing of 12 km, a detector elevation setting of 150 metres above ground level and mean sample interval of 38 metres.RESULTS:Interpreted depths to magnetic material in the southern half of the area surveyed have outlined a central region of possibly greater sediment thickness, bounded to the southwest and east by areas of relatively shallower basement. Consideration of the data available for the northern half of the survey area indicates that, although petroleum fields with no geophysical expression exist, the underlying structure is generally reflected in the gravity field, while the relationship of magnetic sources to structure is more variable. In the undrilled southern region five prospective gravity/magnetic features were outlined, some of which are probably fault-related as they lie on linear magnetic gradients. A sixth feature seen on the interpreted southern extension of the Toolachee anticlinal trend is unique in having a recognizable radiometric signature.
