This report represents an evaluation by Shell's deep water exploration team of geophysical data collected during the 1972-73 survey by the MV Petrel in southern Australia. The Petrel survey was conducted with the object of investigating the structural and sedimentary framework of the supra-crustal transition zone between the continent itself and the ocean basins that flank it. The survey covered the continental slope area from Geraldton in Western Australia to Cape Howe in Victoria, and was laid out in the form of a zig-zag grid. The distance between the end points of the zig-zag varied, but was normally of the order of 150 km. A total of 10,904 line km was surveyed along 51 such regionally dispersed lines.Survey dates: 19/12/72 - 18/4/73.Energy source: air gun.CDP coverage: 2400%.Recording mode: 24 channel digital - Texas Instruments DFS III recorder.SP interval: 50.0 metres; group interval: 100.0 metres.12 lines totalling 2056 line km were acquired in SA waters by UK.-based seismic contractor Seismogram Service (Marine) Ltd as part of this roving research survey conducted under the scope of a Scientific Investigation Permit issued by the Commonwealth of Australia. Data processing and interpretation were performed in Holland by the survey operator SIPM.
