Drill cuttings samples of the Birkhead Formation from a further 16 wells to those originally sampled were selected for a petrographic study of the organic matter they contain. Comparisons were made between the organic petrographic characteristics of coal and dispersed organic matter (DOM) from all 32 wells, and contour plots generated to show the locations of high and low organic contents and the distributions of major organic macerals. The volume and type of coal and DOM over the area studied is highly variable and not related in an obvious manner to the thickness of the Birkhead Formation, but all the patterns found are probably ultimately related to the terrestrial palaeogeography. Organic matter rank appears to have a bearing on the disposition of hydrocarbon occurrences in the Birkhead, with the majority of commercial fields lying within, or near, zones of high exinite DOM.
