AIM: The survey was conducted to provide information on the geology of the virtually unexplored sub-sea region between Backstairs Passage and the offshore Robe Trough of the State's South-East, with a focus on the Kanmantoo Group and Encounter Bay granites interval general structural style beneath the Murray Basin region, and on its relationship to the Otway Basin and to the configuration of the thick Permian Encounter Trough sedimentary succession newly discovered by the intersecting offshore seismic profile SADME 92-1. METHODS: Survey dates: 28 - 29/3/93. Energy source: Tuned airgun array. CDP coverage: 7500%. Recording mode: 300 channel digital - Titan 1000 recording and streamer system. SP interval: 25.0 metres, group interval: 12.5 metres. RESULTS: Line DME 93-1 totalling 191.125 line km was acquired by the Halliburton Geophysical M/V Pacific Titan, and processed by Party 925 of Western Geophysical Corp. in Melbourne, Vic. Interpretation of the final stacked data from this line by geophysicists from the University of Adelaide and SADME has revealed that the Cambrian Kanmantoo Trough sedimentary prism shows internally opposing compressional structures, i.e. northwest-directed fault displacement in the NW versus southeast-directed displacement in the SE, indicating for the first time possible eastern limits to this largely hidden tectonic entity. Additional evidence has also been gained of the existence of a substantially deep and extensive glaciogenic trough within the Permian Troubridge Basin, which should further enhance the petroleum exploration potential of the region.
