The Kirby Prospect is an anticlinal play in the Nappamerri Trough of the Cooper Basin. Current seismic coverage and quality are adequate to place the existence of closure beyond reasonable doubt. Up to 760 feet of vertical closure occurs within a 3660 feet thick sequence of Permian sediments. The prospect contains 2500 feet of prospective section in the Toolachee, Epsilon and Patchawarra Formations. A total Net Effective Pay of 180 feet is predicted. The nearest well to Kirby in the Nappamerri Trough, Burley 1, intersected 190 feet of tight, gas-bearing sands in the Toolachee, Epsilon and Patchawarra Formations. The Kirby anticline is believed to have undergone a longer and more continuous history of structural growth than Burley. Consequently, it may be a more suitable site for entrapment from the earliest stage of hydrocarbon migration in each of these three formations. Early entrapment of hydrocarbons hopefully may have inhibited diagenetic loss of porosity caused by high temperature, which was interpreted to have caused the poor reservoir quality at Burley 1. The anticipated total depth for Kirby 1 is 12,450 feet, within pre-Permian sediments. Drilling and logging techniques will need to take account of anticipated high downhole temperatures and pressures. These anticipated conditions and the depth of the well will make drilling Kirby 1 a relatively high cost exercise. Nevertheless, the predicted reserves are large by comparison with most other prospects remaining in the Cooper Basin. Assuming a trap existence risk of 1, the maximum gas-in-place reserves are estimated to be 800 BCF. This well is proposed as part of the 1978 Independent Exploration Programme to be carried out on behalf of PASA. Delhi will be the operator. Ownership of any petroleum discovered will remain with the partners to the Moomba area 50/30/10/10 Farmout agreement.
