This review article briefly addresses the structural patterns and tectonic history of the Central Flinders Zone of the Adelaide Geosyncline, as largely determined by the nature of the Delamerian Orogeny across this region. Comparisons with the Northern and Southern Flinders Zones, particularly with regard to their fold styles and evidence of palaeo stress field directions during the time of the orogeny, leads to the author's unconventional proposal that an extensive force arose in the Flinders portion of the geosyncline at that time, due to a renewal of deep crustal rifting, with tilting of the basement towards the Torrens Hinge Zone. As a consequence, the superimposed Adelaidean Series sedimentary pile slid under gravity on its basal massive salt horizon, and crowded towards the west. In general this crowding force became heavier towards the west, which resulted in a more complicated structural tenor and increased metamorphism developing against the cratonic barriers restricting movement at the northern end of the Southern Flinders Zone, and similarly at the southern end of the Northern Flinders Zone. Only in the Central Flinders Zone, where the strata slid or crowded over but a limited distance, did this result in more open fold structures and less or negligible metamorphism. However, the massive, possibly even explosive, diapirism characteristic of this zone significantly arose when profound NE-SW trending fault zones developed during the Delamerian Orogeny crossed the now disturbed salt core of a major regional anticline simultaneously forming around the Oraparinna-Blinman location.
