17 samples of Early Cambrian Mount McDonnell Formation shallow marine mudstone outcropping on the northern coastline of Kangaroo Island near Hummocky Point were analysed geochemically to determine their source rock richness and thermal maturity, and the maturation levels of these samples were then compared with those of younger Early Cambrian sediments from the northwestern Stansbury Basin on Yorke Peninsula. The impact of weathering on the dispersed organic matter being analysed is discussed, and the authors stress that caution is always necessary when interpreting organic geochemical data obtained from surface samples.
