PEL 60 covering about 1069 square km of the northern marginal part of the Otway Basin in South Australia, in the onshore Robe Trough region, was granted to Oil Company of Australia Ltd on 11 August 1994, following their successful application for the gazetted vacant petroleum exploration area OT93-A. This area had been postulated to contain structural analogues of the Katnook, Wynn and Sawpit hydrocarbon field discoveries in the south-easterly adjoining Penola Trough. However, at this time OCA regarded the Robe Trough as being at too immature a level of exploration to generate reliable drilling targets, and so the company and its subsequent joint venturers commenced a staged, logical programme of field work involving a progression from reconnaissance to detailed seismic gridding, followed by prospect mapping, evaluation and ranking within a regional perspective. During their four-year tenure comprising active investigation, OCA and its partners acquired 3 seismic surveys totalling 502 line kms of high quality 2-D Vibroseis coverage, flew and interpreted a dataset of 400 m x 1 km infill to the State Government's SAEI aeromagnetic data acquisition programme in the South-East, and drilled three wildcat exploratory wells to economic basement. Unfortunately, no indications of hydrocarbon migration or accumulations were encountered by any of this work, despite the delineation of promising structures and geological environments in the central trough region. The licence was relinquished in good standing, on the basis of perceived diminished prospectivity.
