During the 2-year term of the licence the licensees carried out source rock analyses and geological/geophysical reviews (in conjunction with input from their adjoining PEL 8), and conducted minor reconnaissance seismic surveys in 1981 and 1982 (the LSA-81 and OTSA-82 surveys). Following the unsuccessful drilling of the Banyula 1 wildcat in PEL 8 in 1982, and failure to identify prospective trapping mechanisms from the seismic data acquired in PEL 18, the licensees elected to relinquish the acreage in December 1982.
