TARGET: Copper and uranium in Adelaidean sediments and Mesoproterozoic igneous rocks within a small licence area located 11 miles north-east of Mount Painter. EXPLORATION: A low-level helicopter-borne radiometric survey (using a nominal 1/10th mile flight line spacing and 50 foot mean sensor elevation) with ground scintillometric and rock chip sampling follow-up, concurrent 1:12,000 scale geological mapping, re-sampling of stream sediments on a regional reconnaissance scale (96 samples collected over 6 square miles), and grid-based soil sampling of anomalous zones. RESULTS: Significant airborne radiometric anomalies ranging up to 400 counts per second were investigated on the ground over a radius of 500 feet around the anomaly peaks, by taking hand-held scintillometric readings of radiation intensity over bedrock outcrops. One small occurrence of gummite was found, but no primary uranium mineralisation was seen. Selected rock samples were submitted for uranium and thorium assaying. An atypical uranium value of 670 ppm U was reported from mine dump material sampled at a small copper working in the north of the SML, near where the gummite outcrops, but in general the best values obtained in this area ranged up to 23 ppm U and 69 ppm Th. It was inferred that the uranium concentrations appeared to be structurally controlled, whereas the higher thorium levels reflected particular lithologies. NFM's newly obtained stream sediment sampling data in the Mount Adams region repeated the tenor of Anaconda's previous geochemical results, but a greater degree of analytical precision allowed the recognition of previously undetected copper anomalism located along two parallel lineaments corresponding to the boundary between the Yagdlin Phyllite (lowest unit of the Adelaidean cover) and the later intruded Mount Neill Granite, 1/2 mile south of Mount Adams. However, grid-based soil sampling performed over these lineaments (total 880 samples) returned only 3 samples which were anomalous in both uranium and copper (to 25 ppm U and 220 ppm Cu), although copper alone ranged up to 590 ppm.
