The area is 1 of prolonged, active and deep sedimentation, and has probably been dominantly marine. Dark coloured shales, marls and limestones offer promising source rock conditions, and there are adequate reservoir sands and older dolomitised (Cambrian) limestones. Gentle folding and warping is normal in this tectonically active area. Showings of oil in the Permian, and possibly also in the Tertiary and traces of natural gas in the Cambrian show promising petroleum potential.
