This frontier basin lithostratigraphic and biostratigraphic correlation study is largely based on the petrographic examination of 104 thin sections of samples from rocks intersected in the three Shell offshore exploration wells drilled on the northern basin margin, with inputs from detailed seismic stratigraphic mapping. The Bight Basin area biostratigraphic zonation, here described fully for the first time, is based on sporomorphs, microplankton and foraminifera. The Early to Late Cretaceous terrigenous sedimentary sequence lying between Precambrian basement and the Tertiary marine Eucla Group is thereby divided into 6 time stratigraphic units, for several of which new names are proposed and described.
