Organic sediments from Permian coal measures in the Fly Lake-Brolga area of the Patchawarra Trough were studied using microscopic analysis. The inter-seam sediments contain 3 types of kerogen or dispersed organic matter (DOM), exinitic, vitrinitic and inertinitic. The type of DOM and the petrography of associated coals was correlated. Depositional environments for the coal seams are proposed based on studies of other Australian Permian basins.
