AIM:To define a variety of structures indicated by earlier regional seismic work (the 1976 Pillan Hill and 1979 Peera Peera Seismic Surveys), and establish three possible drilling locations.METHODS: Survey dates: 25/6/80 - 8/11/81. Energy source: Explosives - Geoflex (line source). CDP coverage: 1200%. Recording mode: 24 channel digital - TI DFS V recorder. SP interval: 18.0 metres, group interval: 135.0 metres.75 lines totalling 1340 line km were shot by GES in the seven areas described above, and processed in Adelaide by SSL. Six horizons were interpreted: the three most prominent were mapped in detail at 1:100,000 scale to illustrate both the regional and local structural setting and sequence depositional history of the prospects under investigation. Poolowanna 1 provided the only direct well control for the interpretation. Previous data was reinterpreted as part of the project.RESULTS:The structures detailed by this survey -- Walkandi, Poolowanna, Erabena, Kuncherinna, Oolarinna, Miandana and Koonakoo Prospects -- have been assessed as possible drilling targets, and many other strong leads in their vicinity have been mapped. This has led to a better understanding of regional structural styles. The survey procedure and results have confirmed that Geoflex is an effective source in the difficult dune and salt lake terrain of the Simpson Desert. No particular play has been singled out for drilling at this stage, but at least three geographically separate and structurally different features should be drilled as soon as possible to provide direction to the exploration programme in the block. In the event of no immediate drilling success, the recommendations for an ongoing seismic programme are:-- to better evaluate the Permian Pedirka Basin sequence by carrying out seismic and drilling in the deepest part of the basin, near Mokari 1;-- to further profile the north and south trends of the Poolowanna structure to define its structural history;-- to similarly profile the Miandana structure to find an occurrence of thicker Poolowanna Beds;-- to look for a thin veneer of Permian sediments over the Oolarinna structure; and-- to extend the regional seismic grid eastwards towards the Birdsville Track Ridge.
