This section of the study was based on source rock analyses performed on 75 outcrop and shallow drill core samples from 25 localities, plus other new data derived from Cambrian sediments intersected in the deep petroleum exploration wells Moorowie 1, Coongie 1 and Kalladeina 1, and includes interpretations of biomarker compounds obtained from samples of the Wilkatana 1 crude oil. The hydrocarbon generating potential of Lower and Middle Cambrian carbonates and shales was assessed and the most likely source of the Wilkatana 1 crude oil shows (the Wilkawillina Limestone) was established.

Notes: Includes information on: - 6 Cambrian potential oil source rock samples were analysed in a Delhi Petroleum-commissioned pilot study aimed at evaluating the use of the organic geochemical methylphenanthrene index [MPI], and other aromatic hydrocarbon molecular ratios, as measures of the thermal maturity in Early Palaeozoic sedimentary sequences. The need for this kind of geochemical approach arises because such geologically old rocks do not contain woody organic material, thereby precluding the compilation of standard maturation profiles based on vitrinite reflectance measurements. Amdel contractors' report no. F 6376/86 Parts 1 and 2 (final). Includes report on: - Source Rock Studies, Arrowie Basin. Total organic carbon was obtained by combustion after acid leaching of carbonate minerals. The finely pulverised sample was extracted with 87% chloroform - 13 % methylalchohol and the extract evaporated to remove the solvent. Asphaltenes were removed from the extracted organic matter with petroleum ether and the asphaltene free fraction seperated by liquid chromatography on 20 parts activated alumina under 80 parts activated silica gel. The saturates were eluted with petroleum ether, the aromatics with mixed solvent-benzene 15% in petroleum ether 85%, and the polar compounds with methanol containing approx. 10% benzene. Residual strongly polar compounds were not eluted.
