A small suite of Cambrian rock samples was selected to evaluate the use of the methylphenanthrene index (MPI) and other aromatic hydrocarbon ratios as measures of thermal maturity in Early Palaeozoic sequences. Such very old rocks do not contain woody organic matter, thereby precluding the compilation of standard maturation profiles based on vitrinite reflectance measurements. Geologically reasonable estimates of organic maturity indicate that Early and Middle Cambrian sediments in parts of the Arrowie, Warburton and Stansbury Basins are not overmature, but still lie within the oil window.
