AIM:To integrate good quality new data into the regional seismic grid and mature known structural prospects and leads as potential gas drilling targets, plus explore virgin territory as part of a systematic long-term Vibroseis mapping project in the Cooper Basin, which so far has covered some 4350 line km. This survey programme marks the first direct SA State Government involvement in Cooper Basin gas exploration through its June 1977 Independent Exploration initiative, with the freshly empowered South Australian Petroleum Exploration Group (SAPEG - later to become the South Australian Oil and Gas Corp. Pty Ltd) funding $2 million worth of seismic acquisition over selected areas, which amounted to approximately one half of the total programme. Specific SAPEG objectives were to map crestal and flank plays associated with major anticlinoria in the basin, and to examine extant and new stratigraphic/structural leads on the northern and western margins of the basin for possible wedge-out and other subtle trapping situations.METHODS: Survey dates: 17/4/78 - 21/11/78. Energy source: Vibroseis. CDP coverage: 1200% (1359 km) and 2400% (18 km). Recording mode: 48 channel digital - Geosource Inc. SUM-IT VII recorder. SP/VP interval: 150, 200 and 250 metres, group interval: 75, 100 and 125 metres.RESULTS:66 detailed and semi-detailed lines totalling 1373 line km (of which 100 line km extending into Qld were recorded for well ties) were acquired by Petty-Ray Geophysical and processed by them in Adelaide. Important new stratigraphic and structural information was obtained over 35 leads, and several promising drill sites were matured on existing fields and prospects. The survey has significantly improved the seismic control over the northeastern Patchawarra Trough, northwestern Nappamerri Trough and along the Spencer Nose - GMI Ridge and Toolachee anticlinal trends.
