Sixty five samples from 4 wells were examined for organic matter type and abundance, and maturation levels. The Late Permian Purni and Early Jurassic Poolowanna Formations contain the best source rocks in the Poolowanna Trough. These sequences are mature and may have generated significant amounts of oil and possibly some wet gas and condensate at Oolarinna 1 and Poolowanna 2. Good source rocks are also present within the Middle Triassic Peera Peera Formation, but coal occurrences are minor and sporadic, and the source-potential of this unit is mostly based on the abundance of dispersed organic matter (DOM). The Cretaceous sequence shows fair to good source potential, but very good source potential is indicated by the presence of abundant exinite-rich DOM in early mature Cretaceous sediments at Oolarinna 1.
