The state of diagenesis of the Brolga 1 (and apparently the Tirrawarra 2) samples - as indicated by the vitrinite reflectance, the geochemical and petrophysical data, and a qualitative estimate of the sandstone compaction - is about the same as that of the Middle Ecca in the central part of the northern Karoo in South Africa, where it is unaffected by dolerite intrusions. The source-rock potential of the Brolga 1 shales is comparable, but differences in the clay mineralogy indicate a different type of provenance, and / or weathering and transport regime.
