The well sections analysed are mainly of Cretaceous age and are largely in the early to middle mature zones for oil generation. The Lower Cretaceous sections in Geltwood Beach 1 and Chama 1a have attained sufficient maturity for the commencement of gas generation. Minor oil source potential is identified for the Paaratte Formation in Lake Bonney 1 which would be realised with slightly greater burial off-structure. Traces of migrant oil are noted in the Upper Cretaceous formations in Caroline 1 and Mount Salt 1; larger amounts of non-indigenous hydrocarbons are noted in the Paaratte Formation in Argonaut-A 1, which may represent a biodegraded migrant oil or drilling contamination. Minor oil source potential is identified for the Otway Group in Chama 1a and Geltwood Beach 1, where the section is at an optimum level of maturity for oil generation. However, the main hydrocarbon product of the Otway Group is likely to be gas generated from coals. The sections analysed have just entered the main phase of gas generation and major gas generation may have already taken place where the Lower Cretaceous is buried more deeply off-structure.

Notes: Robertson Research report no. 4695P/D, prepared for American Ultramar Ltd, Mount Kisco, New York, USA. Includes: for each well, profiles of vitrinite reflectance values and spore colour indices plotted against depth, plus gas chromatograms of extracted alkanes derived either from macerals found in potential source rocks or from migrant oils trapped in tight reservoir rock sequences.
