Samples of ?Ordovician to Cretaceous sediments taken from 5 Pedirka Basin petroleum exploration wells, and of crude oils recovered from the Jurassic Poolowanna and Triassic Peera Peera Formations intersected in Poolowanna 1, were examined. The Poolowanna Formation and Jurassic Algebuckina Sandstone are oil-prone potential source rocks. Adequate maturation levels for intense hydrocarbon generation from woody - herbaceous organic matter have been attained by Jurassic sediments at Poolowanna 1, Macumba 1 and Colson 1. By virtue of their significant resinite and subertinite content, less mature Jurassic sediments, such as those at Mokari 1, Macumba 1, Poolowanna 1 and Colson 1, may have source potential for early condensate (light oil) and gas. Shows of oil in the Poolowanna Formation and Peera Peera Formation at Poolowanna 1 probably originated in shales of the Poolowanna Formation.

Includes sub-reports on: - Source Rock Analysis on Samples from 13 Australian Sedimentary Basins (J.D.Saxby) - 6/77. Reconnaisance organic geochemical analyses for measuring total organic carbon content, and optical studies (vitrinite reflectance) to determine the nature and degree of maturation of organic matter, were performed overseas by a French contractor on 14 selected core and composite cuttings samples from 8 South Australian petroleum exploration wells. Units sampled included the Lower Cretaceous sediments of the Otway Basin, early Permian and early Cretaceous sediments from the Murray Basin, and Middle Cambrian sediments from the Stansbury Basin. - SA sedimentary basins (general). Source rock studies. Reports and data. - SADME project: South Australian sedimentary basins (general) source rock studies. Progress reports 1, 26, 36 and 38. - Source Rock Analysis Eocene Eyre Formation. One (1) sample from the Eocene Eyre Formation was received for TOC analysis and Rock-Eval Pyrolysis. This report is a formal presentation of results. - Source rock analyses on samples from thirteen Australian sedimentary basins (N.B. only SA basin examples referenced herein). Contains brief organic geochemical analysis results for core samples from 5 widely separated, shallow company stratigraphic/petroleum exploration wells.
