20 coastal bitumen and drill cutting samples between Portland in western Victoria and the mouth of the Murray River in SA, (concentrating on the Cretaceous interval) from 4 wells were analysed (API gravity, pour point, sulphur content, total organic carbon, rock-eval pyrolysis, organic petrology, extractable organic matter, liquid chromatography, carbon isotope analysis, gas chromatography, gas chromatography - mass spectrometry). The oil generation window is identified for the wells. Although only marginally mature, the best potential source rocks analysed are Early Cretaceous coals and carbonaceous shales at the base of the Eumeralla Formation and in the underlying Pretty Hill Formation at Chama-1A. The bitumens are mature crude oils with a primary algal source in beds rich in organic matter and consist of at least 4 distinct oil families.
