A roughly circular area, 18 km wide, of very poor seismic data beneath the Coorikiana Sandstone, located about 50 km NE of Mungeranie Homestead, was investigated by 7 gravity and magnetic traverses along existing seismic lines, and 1 central linking cross-country traverse (408 reading stations, 137 line km). Interpretation suggests that the anomalous seismic reflection zone is the product of a sudden shock crustal deformation caused by meteorite impact. Includes sub-reports on: - Investigation of the anomalous seismic zone present near the Mulkarra Prospect in the Mulka Block. Seismic interpretation SE of the Mulkarra prospect is hindered by a NW-SE elongated, roughly circular anomaly of poor reflector quality totalling 175 square km in area. Its shape and the severely disrupted Mesozoic reflectors within its margins suggest either an igneous or meteoric origin (e.g. meteorite crater, igneous intrusion, caldera, diapir which could have marked impact on petroleum reservoir quality and thermal maturation in the area. Ground gravity and magnetic surveys and a satellite imagery study to assess the thermal signature of the anomalous zone are proposed. - Mulka Block. Acreage assessment report. Exploration included 2600 km of seismic and 1 exploration well (Mulapula 1). The Block contains 8 strong and 42 weak leads. Exploration has concentrated on structural targets, however stratigraphic plays, particularly onlap and pinchout plays, are also recognized. The primary reservoir objectives are the Namur Sandstone, Hutton Sandstone and Birkhead Formation respectively. The Birkhead Formation is the principal intra-block source rock. Potentially oil mature source rocks are postulated in the depocentre NW of the Birdsville Track Ridge and in the deeper basin areas to the north. Mulapula 1, drilled as a valid crestal test, recorded a moderate oil show in the upper Namur Sandstone but failed to flow oil to surface and recovered 1530 SWM and 170 SOCM. Notes: - A major appraisal by the Santos of the petroleum potential prior to partial relinquishment of PELs 5 and 6 in early 1989.
