Sedimentology of the Cretaceous Platypus Formation in well Duntroon 1, offshore South Australia.

An 18 metre core from the lower part of the Early Cretaceous Platypus Formation in Duntroon 1 was described and interpreted sedimentologically to assist regional depositional modelling of oil search target formations within the Duntroon Basin. The principal identified facies assemblages are thought to represent a fluvial delta top overlain by delta distributary mouth deposits, indicating a gradual transgression across the area. A closely similar rock sequence occurs in Platypus 1 well, 52 km to the WNW, although there, fluvial delta top deposition appears to have continued for longer. This correlation suggests that the delta lateral extent was considerably more than 52 km during Albian-Cenomanian time.
