A large tonnage (~10-50 Mt), easily mined deposit of white kaolin found by the landowner on a property at Mount Sturt has been partly evaluated by auger drilling 44 shallow holes totalling 707 feet, to obtain samples for materials testing and to assess the distribution of the clay. Consultants' reports on laboratory testing of the clay samples indicate that a high degree of beneficiation would be necessary for the kaolin to meet international paper coating specifications, as the desirable minus 2 microns fraction forms only about 5% of the total clay, and as found it has too high a viscosity and abrasiveness, although the brightness appears satisfactory. It was recommended that other applications of the clay be determined, and that overseas market research be initiated into what special treatments could work to upgrade the physical properties of the kaolin to meet paper-making requirements. A number of mineral claims and a surrounding larger tenement (the subject SML) have been taken out to secure title to the deposit.
