A comparative review of the biostratigraphy was undertaken after the drilling of Potoroo 1 and integrated with modelling of sedimentary facies. A marine ingression appears to have taken place across at least part of the Bight Basin during Aptian and Albian times, within an otherwise continental to paralic Cretaceous sequence. However, no such ingression can be recognised in the Duntroon Basin, with consequent implications for Cretaceous source rock development there. The study indicates that the onset of the widespread Tertiary marine transgression of the Australian continent commenced in upper Paleocene times in the section examined in the Bight Basin, but was of lower Eocene age in the Duntroon Basin.
