The study aimed at establishing the maturity and source potential of sediments encountered in the dry well Duntroon 1, besides identifying a source for the non-marine crude oils found stranded along the South Australian coastline. Sediment maturity was assessed via the interpretation of vitrinite reflectance, spore colour indices, liptinite fluorescence colours and organic geochemical molecular maturity parameters. Source potential of the coally, mudstone and siltstone source beds was estimated from petroleum geochemical pyrolysis, yielding a range of standard source rock quality indicators. Further gas chromatographic, GC-MS and stable carbon isotopic analyses of pyrolytic extracts obtained from the deeper coal samples with the best source potential, were compared with the geochemical characteristics of coastal bitumens (weathered submarine oil seeps) stranded on coastlines adjacent to the Duntroon Basin, to see if a genetic relationship exists between any of the seeps and mature lateral equivalents of the coals.
