A trial reconnaisance soil gas geochemistry survey conducted in areas to the east and west of Mount Gambier defined several anomalous zones and confirmed the presence of hydrocarbons in strata overlying several leads defined by Beach primarily from seismic data. The survey results indicate that preferential microseepage of gas is occurring up or along some of the numerous faults known to exist in the Beach licence area. Apart from clusters of anomalous samples defining broader zones, several isolated samples contain many times the background concentration of the alkanes being detected. It is believed that these correspond in position to buried fault trace intersections. However, the relationship of any surface anomaly to underlying structures has not been conclusively demonstrated owing to the sparse layout of the survey network.
