Organic petrology, total organic carbon (TOC), Rock-Eval pyrolysis and preliminary biological marker data are summarised to provide an assessment of the source rock potential of the Eumeralla Formation in the subject wells. The findings are as follows:1) Non-marine Eumeralla sediments are thermally mature over the depth ranges 1800-2600 metres in Chama 1A and 2615-3731 metres in Geltwood Beach 1.2) The terrestrial organic matter in the basal Eumeralla sequence of both wells is sufficiently mature to have generated and expelled hydrocarbons.3) Organic-rich sediments were identified throughout the Eumeralla interval in Chama 1A and generally appear to be good source rocks.4) The shales and siltstones above 2583 metres in the upper Eumeralla interval in Geltwood Beach 1 are mainly organically lean. The shales in the lower Eumeralla are somewhat richer but still represent poor potential source rocks. An algal-rich horizon at 2929-2935 metres was identified by petrological examination and confirmed by Rock-Eval pyrolysis to be a possible source rock. However, the interval appears to be too thin to be regionally significant.5) Overall, from this study it is apparent that the best Eumeralla source rocks are coally shales and coals found in both wells towards the base of the formation.
