Notes: Includes the following reports (indexed separately): (1) "Exploration opportunities in PEL 38, onshore Otway Basin, South Australia [an appraisal of the hydrocarbon prospectivity of PEL 38]" by Beach Petroleum NL (February 1990); PEL 38 is located in the onshore Otway Basin, a proven gas province with commercial production at North Paaratte Field and Caroline 1. Four wells, ie. Iona 1, Katnook 1, Katnook 2 and Ladbroke Grove 1, have recently been completed as shut-in gas discoveries. Although no oil production has yet been established, oil has been recovered from Port Campbell 4, Lindon 1 and Windermere 1. Recent exploration in the Otway Basin, particularly in the Penola Trough, has highlighted a few key elements to success in the area adjoining the permit. The presence of excellent reservoir units, mature source rocks and adequate seals has also been established in the permit. These factors, together with a number of untested play types, favourable economics and the nearby discoveries (Katnook and Ladbroke Grove Gas Fields in PEL 32), make PEL 38 an attractive farmin opportunity. Furthermore, the permit is close to the Adelaide and Mount Gambier gas markets which have an unsatisfied demand for the next decade and beyond. (2) "Western Otway Basin: tenement PEL 38 farmout proposal" by Mosaic Oil NL (September 1992). Report constitutes a licence prospectivity promotional technical brochure aimed at parties interested in farming-in to PEL 38, offering them a chance to earn a 50% working interest by funding the drilling of an exploration wildcat in the 1992-1993 licence year. The brochure summarises licence exploration activity to date, outlines the operator's view of the regional geological setting and petroleum potential of the basin area on offer, and provides an in-depth analysis of a structure considered mature for drilling by any successful farminee (the Koniak Prospect, situated updip of Greenways 1 on the 'Greenways Ridge' structural trend). The breakup unconformity-related trapping potential of the Koniak Prospect, at the level of a basal Eumeralla Formation sand unit found to be gas-bearing in Greenways 1, is thought to be particularly enhanced by the presence of tranpressive origin, Late Cretaceous / Early Tertiary faulted 'flower structures'. These verge on a reactivated antithetic Early Cretaceous normal fault which transects the underlying unconformity, and may provide migration links between a number of localised basal Eumeralla transgressive sand buildups postulated to occur against Early Cretaceous fault scarps exposed within this unconformity, thus significantly increasing the likely reservoir volume beyond that mapped for the Greenways Prospect closure.
