In July and August 1969 a ground radiometric survey of readings taken at 25 foot intervals on a 100 foot grid was conducted on the eastern flanks of the Iron Prince massif, with the aim of further investigating 3 radioactive anomalies discovered there in 1954 by BHP. A number of other radioactive anomalies were thereby located, and costeans were cut across the area of highest readings to locate the anomaly source. This was found to be a narrow (18 inches - 2 feet wide) zone of sheared and weathered gneissic basement with a high (up to 10%) monazite content, which assayed 1.55% Th and 0.035% U. Three shallow percussion holes totalling 170 feet were drilled to determine the extent of the mineralised zone at depth, but only one hole intersected it. The zone's low uranium content and apparently limited extent are factors which suggest that it does not warrant further work.
