An investigation of historic shallow workings on secondary copper mineralisation associated with a narrow fracture zone in the Moonabie Porphyry comprised 1:1000 scale surface mapping, geochemical sampling, petrographic studies and an IP survey. Minor grains of sulphides (chalcopyrite and covellite) were seen in polished sections of sampled late-stage quartz-limonite veins emanating from the Charleston Granite, found in an old shaft located just to the south-west of the copper workings. However, there is no surface evidence of mineralisation in areas away from the line of old workings. Migration of the copper-bearing solutions from the granite out into the adjoining porphyry may only have occurred relatively recently via deeply circulating groundwater in the Tertiary to present-day environment. The IP survey of the porphyry returned negative results, and coupled with the limited extent of mineralisation and a lack of direct geological correlation between the veins and the types of acid igneous rocks present, led to a conclusion that no further exploratory work was warranted.
