Minlaton South 1 was a shallow stratigraphic test well drilled by Beach Petroleum to investigate a possible ?Archaean basement high subcropping 3.75 miles south of Minlaton township, as suggested by SADM regional mapping observations made during 1961. The well spudded on 8/6/66, and was rotary drilled through cover to reach its target at a presumed depth of about 500 feet, with ditch cuttings being taken at intervals of approximately every 10 feet. Pre-Quaternary sediments penetrated comprised Permian mudstones, clays, soft shales and boulders, but at approximately 520 feet cuttings of presumed Cambrian limestone (recognised in the field by comparisons with lithotypes then being encountered in cores from the Stansbury West 1 stratigraphic well) were identified. Due to lost circulation drilling difficulties Minlaton South 1 was plugged and abandoned at a total depth of 540 feet on 14/6/66.
