A review of the oil potential of the Eromanga Basin sequence in the South Australian portion of the Nappamerri Trough has been completed, concentrating on the Burley, Kirby and McLeod area due to the availability of well data and the presence of a relatively modern (1983 and 1984) seismic grid. Abundant fluorescence shows within Eromanga units at Burley 2 and McLeod 1 suggest that hydrocarbon generation/migration has occurred. Massive sands in the Hutton and Namur Sandstones are tight, but more thinly bedded potential reservoirs occur in the mid-Hutton, Birkhead Formation and Murta Member, with porosities up to 20%. The study included a detailed remapping of the Burley, Kirby and McLeod areas at the 'C' and 'H'-Horizons, and the production of a 'C-H' isochron map. When combined with the results of the recent mapping of Permian horizons for Santos' Low Deliverability Gas Study, a good understanding of structural development in the Trough has been obtained. As a result, oil potential has been recognised within a number of Mesozoic horizons and possible reserves are calculated accordingly.
