Resumed exploration for economic stratiform base metal deposits within basal Cambrian and upper Adelaidean metasediments in the area of the Arden and Ragless synclines, 20 km north of Quorn, concentrated on geochemical prospecting and detailed, 1:2000 to 1:6000 scale geological mapping to try to elucidate controls on known mineralisation and to generate new prospects. Once access for exploration could be gained onto seven existing mineral claims with potential for undiscovered primary mineralisation at depth, a programme of soil sampling, bulldozer costeaning and bulk rock chip sampling of limonitic jasper outcrops, plus extensive grid auger drilling to sample covered bedrock, led to the drilling of one 200 foot deep diamond hole at the Mount Arden mine. No downdip extension to the worked copper lode in Parachilna Formation dolomitic claystone was encountered before a decision was made to terminate the drilling within an unexpectedly shallowly subcropping, hard grey and barren orthoquartzite unit (probable infolded Pound Quartzite). Trenching, to obtain 25 rock samples for running semi-quantitative spectrographic scans on, and ground magnetic surveying over suspected remnant, Fe-Mn lateritised gossans mapped at surface within the Parachilna Formation and also the basal Wilkawillina Limestone showed that, although they carry up to 1-2% zinc plus elevated copper in several instances, and so may be indicative of deeper bodies of willemite mineralisation, particularly in the Ragless syncline, their low magnitude and diffuse magnetic response means that prospective similar but buried jasperoid bodies cannot be resolved if they occur under any great depth of overburden. A final programme of 'blind' rotary percussion drilling (29 holes for 6405 feet) was carried out on SML 709 in late 1972, along two traverses which cut across the axis of the Arden syncline at right-angles, again targeting the basal Cambrian strata under cover. Although a relative enrichment in zinc vs copper was noted, all resulting metal assay values were low and gave no encouragement for further work.
