The Mount McTaggart prospect is located 15 miles south-west of Arkaroola Base Camp and 3 miles west of the Arkaroola-Balcanoona Road. A programme of ten rotary percussion holes totalling 3457 feet commenced on 11/10/1971 and was completed on 10/11/1971. Seven of these holes aimed to test a large silicified breccia outcrop with associated IP, magnetic and geochemical anomalies. The other three holes tested two gossan outcrops having anomalous copper content. The drilling carried out near the old mine demonstrated the presence of a metasomatised zone with associated igneous intrusions and quartz veins. The gossans that were drilled are likely to be false, being related only to near-surface concentrations of secondary copper minerals, and not to any significant primary mineralisation at depth.
