Copper exploration in the vicinity of Kanmantoo has recently been recommenced in order to find out whether extensions to the known lode-bearing andalusite schist horizon, containing possible economic mineralisation, will fall within the alignment of the proposed South-Eastern Freeway excavations. 5 diamond drillholes totalling 2773 feet were put down at the South Hill prospect, which borders this alignment zone, to follow-up minor indications of copper sulphide ore found there by previous Mines Exploration exploratory drilling of IP and magnetic anomalies in 1964-65. The best current ore intersection was obtained in diamond cores from hole SH4, which intersected mineralised lode material beneath old surface workings over a width of 170 feet, and which graded up to 1.23% Cu between 260-274 feet depth. The other 4 holes failed to encounter similarly significant mineralisation. Concurrent with the latest drilling, detailed geological mapping at 1:5000 scale was begun in the vicinity of the Kanmantoo mine, to the north of the Freeway alignment, with new grid surveying and the acquisition of IP and ground magnetic profiles then being commenced over the mapped lode-bearing horizon, to develop further targets for drilling.
