TARGET: Metamorphic and hypogene iron ore, and latterly, epigenetic base metals, associated with pronounced local magnetic anomalies in the Mount Woods area. EXPLORATION: Reconnaissance geological mapping and sampling of the Mount Woods ?Archaean basement outcrop, and scout rotary/air and core drilling (7 holes totalling 2349 feet, including 203 feet of recovered cores) to test for concealed basement mineralisation beneath 5 subsidiary magnetic peaks on the South magnetic anomaly. RESULTS: One drillhole encountered trace amounts of native copper, pyrite and chalcopyrite in the ?Archaean metasedimentary basement. Pervasive magnetitic alteration of gneisses, hornfels and aplite dykes, and the advent of late stage basic igneous intrusions (diorite, gabbro) causing contact metamorphic overprinting of regional granulite facies assemblages, have produced marked effects on the ?Archaean sequence that are evident from petrographic, mineragraphic and chemical analytical studies.
