Continuing exploration for economic stratiform copper occurrences in the Carrieton area has involved considerable further drilling (69 rotary drag bit holes for a total of 2864 m, 19 percussion / precollar cased holes for a total of 2381 m, and 6 diamond holes which have cored 1490.7 m), drill sample assaying and petrographic examination of cores and cuttings, plus sedimentological, structural and geochemical data interpretation of both subsurface and exposed prospective strata. A statistical analysis performed on downhole copper assay values obtained from stepout drilling on the Carrieton Fold Zone has confirmed its wider potential for hosting stratiform copper mineralisation in suitable rocks. Also, the mapping of lithofacies changes within the subsurface, leading away from the Copper Claim prospect both to the north and south, has helped to unravel the possible palaeogeography of sediment depositional environments at the time of emplacement of the cupriferous beds. Two diamond drillholes put down at the Copper Claim South prospect successfully demonstrated the continuity southwards of fine-grained but low grade stratiform copper mineralisation (chalcopyrite, chalcocite and some native copper) within the Eurelia Beds host sequence. However, targeted percussion drilling on the South Domal portion of the Copper Claim prospect showed that no supergene copper mineralisation of ore grade exists there above the Upper Mineralised Horizon. Close scrutiny of drill core mineralogy and rock structuring has allowed some observations concerning the origin of the copper mineralisation. Four episodes of calcite veining are seen in the Copper Claim strata: at least one of them is thought to pre-date sediment dewatering and lithification. The relationship of sulphide ore particles to associated clastic fragments appears to indicate at least a partly detrital origin for the copper ore. Its predominantly sub-economic concentration within the mineralised rock sequence, and apparent association with a transgressive paralic to littoral depositional environment, suggests that the Copper Claim occurrence may in fact be marginal to a nearby, better-developed stratiform copper orebody.
