After a geological reconnaissance conducted in the Lake Torrens area located some surface geochemical enrichments of phosphate within an attenuated basal section of the Cambrian Andamooka Limestone at several different stratigraphic levels within that unit, it became apparent that a more complete section of this unit, including the phosphatic horizons, might exist towards the east in a more basinal setting. To test this hypothesis, a scout drilling programme of 9 vertical rotary/percussion drillholes, for a total penetration of 458 m, was completed over the inferred basin structure. The results of the drilling were not encouraging, with a highest drill sample assay value of just 0.15% P2O5 being returned, and no significantly phosphatic horizons encountered. Assays for copper, lead and zinc also failed to produce any levels of interest. The thickness of Andamooka Limestone intersected by the drillholes ranges from 22 m to 38 m, and there is a slight apparent thickening towards the centre of the basin. Typically, finely crystalline massive and occasionally vuggy dolomite overlies oolitic dolomite/limestone with intraclastic material at the base, representing marginal marine environments. No fossiliferous strata indicative of offshore deposition were seen, and the phosphatic transition horizon seen at Lake Arthur is also absent.
